Saturday stove fire, crash keep emergency services busy

Emergency services responded to two incidents over the weekend — a vehicle crash in Tucker Road and an unattended cooking fire at a house in Makaraka.

At around 4pm on Saturday, appliances were sent to a property at the corner of Ora Street and the main road at Makaraka after food on a stove overheated and caught fire.

“The flames had got into the rangehood above the stove and were starting to get into the ceiling,” a senior firefighter said.

The firefighters stopped it before the fire could get any further.

“It caused minor damage to the ceiling and moderate damage to the rangehood.

“Once again we remind people about the need to keep looking while they are cooking,” he said.

At 6.30pm on Saturday night, a fire crew, St John ambulance and police responded to a two-vehicle crash in Tucker Road at Makauri.

It happened near the Haisman Road corner.

“There were two people slightly injured and they were checked over at the scene by the ambulance officers,” an emergency services spokesman said.

Police have an inquiry under way.
