Liquor ban for festival surrounds
Police have successfully applied for a liquor ban to be imposed during the Longline Classic Music Festival at Labour Weekend.
The police request was granted by Gisborne district councillors without debate.
The temporary alcohol ban is to protect the Midway Beach area and environs surrounding the Soundshell during the event on October 26 and 27.
The ban covers the area bounded by Awapuni Rd, Pacific St, Centennial Marine Drive, Beacon St, Salisbury Rd and Midway Beach.
It applies from 8am on Saturday, October 26, to 8am on Sunday, October 27.
Police made the request because liquor bans applied to previous events at the Soundshell reduced instances where members of the public were subjected to incidents involving threats and disorder from intoxicated people.
The maximum infringement fine for the breach of the alcohol ban is $250.
Council staff believe the ban will provide an additional tool to assist the police in dealing with alcohol-related disorder issues and minimising alcohol-related harm.
