Kia ora. An inspiring Gisborne Herald article “Back on Board”, concerning Maz Quinn’s life-threatening surfing experience and amazing recovery from the mighty Māhia reefs.
These reefs and surrounding shores are infused with mana and tapu from those great forebears who once ruled those domains. Maz has now experienced that mana and his story adds to that and to local history in a contemporary way. Woe betide anyone who should disregard or belittle the beauty, power and sanctity of the ancestral environment.
Maz Quinn is viewed by many surfers as a role model and surfing hero. His renowned wave-riding prowess and contest victories are world class. Maz’s God-blessed survival means he can continue to be a role model even beyond the narrow silo of the surfing world. Our wider community needs people like Maz who have “life or death” experiences to share and inspire others to better themselves as victors in life.
Maz Quinn’s greatest victory may be as a world-champion human being, husband and father. Some of us have lived what Maz has been through and he has our respect. Respect well earned.
