The rivers of Gisborne are being polluted with garbage and silt by us humans.

Two years ago I was part of a clean-up of the Taruheru River and what we found was really disgusting — things like broken computers, old shoes and even a destroyed toilet seat.

All of these things are part of human pollution. We are throwing away so many things that could be reused or recycled.

It may seem hard but it’s actually fairly simple. You could donate old items to an op shop so that someone else can enjoy them, or you could find a new purpose for some items.

Remember the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
