CO2 is a greenhouse gas warming the atmosphere. In 1960-1970 the yearly growth rate of CO2 in the atmosphere was slightly less than 1 part per million but this has been steadily increasing, reaching 2.27ppm at the beginning of 2023. This means that currently, the concentration of (atmospheric) carbon dioxide is growing by about 2.27ppm per year.
A new record for the highest daily level of CO2 in the atmosphere has been set this week, ringing alarm bells about the pace of global warming.
The daily record parts per million CO2 was recorded at Manau Loa by the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, with similar numbers reported by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.
Scientific consensus is that the planet remains healthy for humanity at up to 350ppm.
