A fire outside a scrapyard in Stanley Road caused multiple short circuits on an underground cable resulting in just over 400 customers losing power, at around 9.15pm.
“Most had power restored within 50 minutes,” said a Firstlight Network spokeswoman this morning.
“Unfortunately, around 40 customers were off overnight. Their power will come back on later this afternoon once the damage has been repaired. This covers the city side of Stanley Road from Innes Street to Awapuni Rd and around past the Truck Stop.”
Gisborne Fire Stationmaster Tim Lifter said it was suspected the fire was caused by power-plinth malfunction, and probably took place around 8.45pm. But investigations are ongoing.
Stanley Road was closed to traffic for safety reasons between Innes Street and Awapuni Road.
