Police yesterday released the name of the man who died in an incident on Moana Road at the northern end of Wainui Beach on Saturday.
He was 70-year-old Alan Hjorth of Wainui Beach Gisborne.
Mr Hjorth was walking along the footpath opposite the Whales Grave at midday last Saturday when he was struck by a car backing out of a driveway.
He sustained critical head injuries and was transported to hospital by St John ambulance.
He passed away in Gisborne Hospital on Sunday.
“We extend our condolences to his family at this difficult time, “ police said.
The family have asked for privacy as this time.
Police said the Serious Crash inquiry into the circumstances of the tragedy were ongoing.
A family message in today’s Herald indicates Mr Hjorth leaves behind wife Sue, six children and nine grandchildren.
His funeral will take place at his home in Moana Road from 11am, with the actual service at midday, on Saturday.
“Following the service we will continue with a celebration of Alan,” the family said.
“In honouring Alan’s life and the joy he brought to us all, we would like to encourage people to dress in colour.
“We love you, we do, forever.”
Emergency services found him unresponsive on March 5 in Wairoa.
