Pay your dog rego by 5pm Monday or face penalty

THE district's dog owners have until close of business on Monday to get their canines registered before the penalty fee for late registrations kicks in.

So far, 40 percent had not done so.

As of this morning Gisborne District Council had received nearly 7000 registration fees, representing about 60 percent of the district's dog population.

“I think the number of registrations in to date would be up a bit on last year,” said animal control team leader Ross Hannam.

“That's because we have given everyone longer to get their animals registered before the penalty date this year due to the Covid crisis.”

The cut-off date before incurring a penalty fee has previously been the last day of July.

“There's a range of available discounts too to further encourage people to register their dogs,” Mr Hannam said.

“We have tended to have about 95 percent of the dogs in the region registered by around December each year, which is really good.”

Tairawhiti has a total dog population of around 11,300.

“We want to keep our registration rate high. and we urge people who have not yet paid their fees to do so by Monday at 5pm.”

After that a 25 percent penalty will apply.
