A109 Light Utility Helicopter flight with mayor Gisborne City from the air in November 2023.

Looking at all the unenforceable edicts coming from the UN and the International Court of Justice, it seems the world is no further towards even a temporary solution to the Gaza conflict.

The most practical solution in the short term is a safety refuge in the Sinai. That possibility is at long last being debated on Al Jazeera — although most commentators, but not all, are negative.

So what alternatives are being offered? It amazes me how many officials in the UN and associated agencies think a one-state or two-state solution would work, with Palestinians and Israelis re-marshalled to live side by side. How would the UN enforce such a re-melding of Israel and the Palestinians . . . by force?

I hope if anyone replies to this letter they will suggest actual solutions rather than throwing their “experts” or slogans at me to “boo’’ me off these pages. Such is the style of some local correspondents.
