With Israel’s military indicating through official media channels they are about to take military action against Hamas in southern Gaza, in the Rafah area, the 1.9 million Palestinians who have been packed into that area will likely believe their bad dream has really turned into a nightmare — especially if Hamas decides to make a stand there.
It is almost unbelievable that the UN will not lean on Egypt to open its border to the degree that a refuge “tent city” could be set up in the Sinai.
The life-saving advantages for the Palestinians, and the chance of, if not a solution, then at least a de-escalation, are obvious. In such a refuge, medical and food aid could be given unhindered. Better shelter and safety could be provided.
It is quite likely that a large percentage of the Palestinians moving from Gaza would suit the Israelis, and anger many people who see themselves “being on the side of the Palestinians”. Many of the latter, even if they do not realise it, are in reality demanding that the Palestinians offer up possibly thousands more to their deaths, so their non-Gazan supporters can be seen to take the win.
What we are seeing here is confirmation that international politics will trump humanity every time. Over the millenia it has always been the same. Should we expect anything different this time around?
