More than 20 Gisborne Boys’ High School students used their green thumbs to weed out undesirable overgrowth at Waikanae Stream on Thursday.
Assistant head of science Summer Edwards said the weeding session was a collaborative part of the curriculum involving science learning, helping the community and looking after their local
awa (river).
“Our Year 9 students know the importance of having native trees along the waterways, checking for water quality and understand the changes in nitrogen and phosphorous levels.
This opportunity is part of their kaitiakitanga (guardianship/protection) project and the weeding helps keep the stream healthy.”
Ms Edward said the school reached out to the Waikanae Stream clean-up team to offer their help. They thanked Judds for its “efficient” green waste disposal system and Women’s Native Tree Project Trust for donating 32 native shrubs.
