Police have seen a trend in Gisborne over the last month or two involving vehicle crime, where people have left their vehicles insecure with valuables inside and thieves have taken advantage.

Inspector Darren Paki said there have been a number of incidents in that category.

“It’s been a trend we’ve noticed where vehicles have been left unlocked, and offenders have got inside to steal valuables.

“We would ask the public to be aware that this has been happening, and to be more security conscious.

“It applies to vehicles parked on the road and also up people’s driveways.”

Inspector Paki said there have been no particular parts of the city where it’s been happening.

“There are no locations where the trend has been more noticeable than others.”
