In response to the article regarding the sports complex, I would like to offer some clarity on this topic. During deliberations with the Indoor Advocacy Group my understanding has always been that it would be a multi-purpose complex suitable to support sport and community activities. The rationale underpinning this approach is to encourage national community events, conferences, national sport events, etc, to our region. It is also to inform and assist a financial sustainability model for the build.
With regard to the build costs, again this is still a work in progress but I am aware of indoor facilities being built for well below the $30-40 million mentioned.
Due diligence is currently taking place, including a feasibility study. Once this mahi is completed, more up-to-date information and important factors will be revealed to inform community decision-makers and the public at large.
