Opinion

Why is the Gisborne District Council using bolt guns to euthanise dogs at their pound? (Beloved family dog killed by Gisborne District Council, Stuff.co.nz, 25th September).

Sarge the dog was allegedly killed by a bolt gun after being mistakenly euthanised at the pound.

Bolt guns should never be used on dogs as this method is inhumane and cruel. Dog pounds should pay for a veterinarian to administer pentobarbital by injection. This is a much more humane way of administering euthanasia compared with the barbaric bolt gun method that would cause immense distress to a very frightened and stressed dog. I urge the Gisborne District Council to end this practice and use a more humane method. My sincere condolences to the family of Sarge who will clearly be missed by many people.
