Metservice warning about swells, gales

Boaties are being warned of large swell conditions off the Gisborne-Mahia coast over the next few days.

The wave warning is for the area from  Mahanga to Potikirua Point.

For the Portland Island marine area MetService has put out a gale and a swell warning for today through to Thursday.

The forecast is for rough seas, with strong south-west winds on Wednesday, when the south-west swell is expected to peak at around 4.5 metres off the Tuahine Rise by 4pm that afternoon.

Conditions should ease over Thursday becoming moderate by evening.

Meanwhile,  MetService is predicting a return to fine weather for the Gisborne region in its extended outlook.

After a cooler, rainy spell over the past few days which eased the dryness of local soils, MetService says fine sunny days will be back from today onward.

The forecast starts with westerlies and sun, with the weather staying fine as far as Wednesday next week, wth light winds.

No significant weather events are on the cards for the district over this period. — RH
