A109 Light Utility Helicopter flight with mayor Gisborne City from the air in November 2023.

A man was taken to Gisborne Hospital on Wednesday night after the small SUV he was driving crashed into the roadside debris barrier on the blind corner at the top of Tatapouri Hill on State Highway 35.

The crash happened at around 8pm.

“He had sustained some minor injuries and was taken to hospital by St John ambulance,” an emergency services spokesman said.

The man managed to get out of the vehicle with help from passers-by.

“Other motorists stopped their vehicles and put their hazard lights on at either end of the crash site,” the spokesman said.

“They also administered first aid, and looked after the injured driver until we got there.

“They did a great job.”

The highway was closed for a short time while the crash scene was cleared.
