A109 Light Utility Helicopter flight with mayor Gisborne City from the air in November 2023.

A Gisborne man critically injured in a vehicle crash at Mahia on Sunday remains in what has been described as a “stable” condition in Wellington Hospital.

Poverty Bay-East Coast representative golfer Andrew Higham was on his way home the morning after competing in Mahia when the ute he was driving left Mahia East Coast Road on the peninsula and rolled.

Another motorist saw it happen and called emergency services.

Mr Higham was flown to Wellington Hospital after the crash.

A family member yesterday told The Herald he sustained serious head injuries, along with multiple fractures.

“Andrew’s in the intensive care unit at Wellington Hospital and is being heavily sedated.

“The hospital describe his condition as stable,” the family member said.

“He’s being well looked after.”

Mr Higham, originally from Te Puia Springs, is a long-time PBEC rep golfer with a list of successes including Poverty Bay, King of the Coast (Tolaga Bay) and East Coast (Te Puia Springs) open titles, and many club championship crowns.

He was representing Te Puia at the Oligoi Jug men’s interclub pennants at Mahia Golf Club on Saturday.
