“The victim sustained multiple injuries including facial injuries and stab wounds and lacerations about the body,” Sergeant Kirk said.
“He was admitted to Gisborne Hospital in a serious but stable condition.”
Police have descriptions of the attackers.
“They are described as male Maori in their 20s. One was clean-shaven with short hair and a black hooded jersey.
“The other two were wearing black clothing and had their faces covered,” Detective Sergeant Kirk said.
“The attackers were on foot and were last seen walking either down Gordon Street toward Winter Street, or Ormond Road toward Winter Street.
“An unprovoked attack of this nature is of serious concern to police and we appeal for information from the public who may have any information about it.”
