Re: Fancy a trout? Oct 27 article.
While I personally will always applaud those who wish to teach the art of fly fishing for trout (especially for free), I also believe those in a position of influence such as angling clubs, Fish & Game etc should set a good example.
While many of this region’s waterways have obviously been devastated by Cyclone Gabrielle and it is too early in the current trout season to properly evaluate the cyclone’s full effect on trout numbers elsewhere, this is not the time to advocate killing and eating the remaining breeding stock.
After Cyclone Bola devastated the Motu catchment in March 1988, and before the remaining trout started their spawning runs, I approached our known night, small-stream harvesters and asked them to refrain from their regular activities for the next few years until the river recovered.
They did, and anglers from all over the world were grateful.
