Big Wednesday claimedTHE unclaimed winning Big Wednesday ticket from last week’s final draw has been claimed. Bought from Ideal Store, the win was claimed at Countdown Gisborne.

The ticket was one of three winning $87,272 tickets sold here. The three were among the 209 nationwide who split a $15 million jackpot.

The other two winning tickets from Gisborne went to a woman who bought her tickets from Elgin Four Square and won nearly $175,000 with two separate tickets.

Waipoa River fireFIREFIGHTERS were called to the mouth of the Waipaoa River yesterday morning to put out a small fire that had started in some driftwood.

The call came in at around 10.50am and a fire service crew from Gisborne and a Rural Fire crew attended.

“The crews were there for about an hour putting it out,” a Rural Fire spokeswoman said.

There was no indication of exactly how the fire might have started.

Jewellery unclaimedAN item of jewellery valued at several thousand dollars found in the Gisborne CBD late last year remains under lock and key at the Wairoa police station.

The jewellery was found on the footpath between Peel and Lowe streets on December 18.

“It was handed in to the Wairoa police station in February and remains unclaimed,” a Wairoa police spokeswoman said.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who might have lost this valuable item.

“No inquiries have been made about it at either the Gisborne or Wairoa stations since it was found.”

Contact Wairoa police if you suspect it could belong to you.
