Lara — you can point out all the wrongs in society and use them as excuses why children aren’t going to school. It’s raining, it’s cold, I don’t want to walk, our home is damp . . .

Children in parts of Africa and some Muslim countries would walk miles, suffer extreme heat and bombed-out cities to get to school.

Our parents need a good shake-up. If your kid doesn’t go to school, they won’t get an education, nor a good job, nor a good wage/salary. They will be dependent on welfare and end up with as much as their own parents have.

And if you consider our education system to be Eurocentric, it is probably because employers here and overseas require good English skills, ability to add numbers, and the ability to write, at the very least. Knowledge of history, indigenous language and science is nice to have, and there are jobs for people with this knowledge of course, but most jobs in the private sector require English, maths and western science knowledge. That’s just the way the world works.
