Modelling shows the projected possible position of the deep pressure system by Sunday of next week.
There are indications a tropical cyclone could be headed towards the North Island at the end of next week, threatening more bad weather for the Gisborne-East Cape region.
Climate and weather agencies across the south-east Pacific region are keeping an eye on what is expected to develop in the Coral
Sea between the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Australia.
Early signs are that pressure will drop significantly in the area, leading to the formation of a tropical cyclone in the middle of next week.
Modelling by various programmes indicates the deep low could then travel south reaching north of New Zealand by the weekend following next week.
No advisories have been issued at this stage, but MetService’s cyclone outlook to Sunday, January 21, says: “A trough over the Coral Sea may become more active later this week, and there is . . . a moderate risk that a tropical cyclone may form in the Coral Sea from Saturday.”
