A woman accused of threatening to blow up Gisborne police station has been remanded into custody for mental health reports.
Marie Eileen Brown, 47, allegedly threatened to blow up the station on June 8, this year. As a result, she was charged with a Crimes Act offence of threatening to
cause major property damage to part of a national infrastructure — an offence that carries a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment.
She is also charged with assaulting police and breaching bail.
Counsel Mark Sceats made a bail application on Brown’s behalf on Monday in Gisborne District Court but Judge Warren Cathcart refused to grant it. However, the judge agreed with Mr Sceats that in-depth mental health reports were now necessary. Brown had previously been screened by the regional forensic health service but her health seemed to have deteriorated since then, the judge said.
Brown had appeared in court via AV-link from a police custody suite. Her reaction to the judge’s decision not to grant bail could be seen onscreen. Visibly upset, she struggled with an officer as he tried to remove her from the AV booth.
