Firefighters were called to a house in Childers Road near the Elgin shops yesterday morning after a passer-by heard smoke alarms going off inside and saw smoke coming from the house.
Fire and Emergency NZ sent crews to the house at around 8am.
“The passer-by forced entry to the home,
where no one was home at the time, and found a pot of food overheating on the stove,” a senior firefighter said.
“He turned the stove off, took the pot outside and called 111.”
The fire crews searched the house to ensure there was no one inside, and then ventilated the place.
