HOT DIGGITY DOG!

WINNER: Leigh Anderson, with her friend's dog Finn, was judged best dressed in the Fashion in the Field competition at the terrier race day.

Folk were out in their fashion finery at Gisborne Terrier Race Against Time yesterday, raising over $35,000 for Tairawhiti residents diagnosed with breast cancer.

The group has raised thousands of dollars over the years putting on the ever-popular race day featuring tiny terrier racers.

Cooler temperatures and showers did not deter some 370 race-goers who placed bets with “funny money” and bid on prizes donated by local businesses at auction.

Around 40 dogs were on the track and even a few children got involved in the races.

The event attracted terriers and their owners from as far as Wellington and Auckland.

The champion dog of the day was Bella Brown from Hawke's Bay who came along with her owner Mick Brown.

Team Yoda won the best group in the fashion parade and collected donations totalling $1059 for the cause.

Another fine feature of the day was five men who all donned pink suits. They put the suits up for auction, bringing in a tidy $700 for the charity.

All the profits raised go towards packs given to people diagnosed with breast cancer in the region. The packs are full of information and vouchers to help people along while they have treatment for their cancer.

Co-organiser Jennie Law was blown away by Gisborne's ability to get out in force for a good cause.
