Interesting reading in last Saturday’s newspaper regarding the clean-up after Cyclone Gabrielle.
It wasn’t just locals involved in the clean-up. One young ex-Gisborne man, who I will call Antony, travelled from Auckland with the express purpose of helping with the clean-up.
He was asked if he could pick up a vital piece of equipment which was required by the Gisborne District Council Waterworks Department, which he collected from the supplier in Auckland.
While here he spent several days clearing silt from a property in Marian Drive, which he found hard work but very rewarding.
During his stay in the city his own house in Greenhithe was flooded during heavy rain, but because of road closures he was unable to return home. His wife was able to call on the local community to help her and her two young children to cope with the flooding.
