Re your front page article on June 9.
It is interesting to note this Government’s u-turn with regard to the investigation now proposed to use forestry slash as a source of biofuel/bioenergy. In January 2021 the Government agreed in principle to implement a biofuels mandate. This was scrapped when Chris Hipkins took over the reins as PM and announced its demise on February 9, 2023.
Globally, forestry slash and other such waste have been used successfully for the production of biofuel. It should have been instigated in New Zealand years ago when the issue of forestry slash first began to become apparent and a major destructive force on our environment — especially here on the East Coast.
It took Labour nearly six years to do nothing and now it has been announced and heralded as some sort of miracle fix by a Government that only four months ago scrapped support for biofuels. What a sham!
