Environment Minister David Parker has responded to questions about whether the Government might appoint a commissioner to take over resource management functions, powers and duties of Gisborne District Council, as recommended by the Ministerial Inquiry into Land Uses.
“The report ‘From Outrage to Optimism’ makes a series of substantial recommendations to improve the planning rules around log harvesting and slash management,” Mr Parker told The Gisborne Herald.
“Ministers have been impressed with the quality of the analysis and findings in the report, especially given the short time frame taken to produce it.
“The Government is not proposing appointing Commissioners to replace the Gisborne District Council.
“However, the Government recognises that local authorities may require central Government assistance to implement any changes based on the report’s recommendations.
