Gisborne ParkKaren Hay has only played a handful of rounds this year but there was no signs of rust as she added another trophy to her long list of successes on Sunday.

Hay and Jean Foot won the Benson Cup women’s pairs final in emphatic manner — a 6 and 5 disposal of Shirley Paku and Karen McDonald.

“We never won a hole,” said Paku, who was full of praise for Hay.

“Karen has not had a lot of golf this year but she played magnificently . . . and Jean put in her sixpence-worth.”

Prolific senior club championship winner Hay, playing off 10 these days, carded 81 in the heavy conditions.

The Boyle men are two wins away from joining an elite club in Te Kanawa Cup men’s pairs history.

Danny Boyle and son Zane defeated Mike Hutton and Glen McKinnon 4 and 3 in their matchplay quarterfinal on Sunday, and kept alive their chances of achieving a rare father-son Te K Cup success.

Standing in their way in this weekend’s semifinals are Brad Reynolds and Tony Leggett, who saw off Gisborne Intermediate student Zach Rolls and Robert Taylor 2-up.

Wayne McHugh and Butch Atkins were made to work in their semifinal against one man. Roger Kelso was without Jack Glassford, who was unable to play, but pushed his opponents all the way to the 16th hole.

McHugh and Atkins face the winner of the clash between brothers Sel and Quentin Peneha and Pete Cameron and Chum Aramakutu.

The Kahlenberg Cup women’s pairs field has been pruned to four after two days of matchplay this week.

Those to emerge unbeaten were Mary Allan and Sue Kemp, Margot Shanks and Peri Gayford, Odette Thompson and Vicki Fraser and Viv Bell and Jan Steele.

Allan/Kemp face Shanks/Gayford in one semi on May 23 while Thompson/Fraser meet Bell/Steele in the other.

Richard “Chips” Owen has had to endure plenty over a tough period, which saw the former single-figure handicapper rise to as high as 23.

He was regularly reaching into his wallet on Thursdays and one mate even nicknamed him Bradman . . . “because he’s averaging 99”.

He reached his nadir on December 7 of last year when he signed for 106.

But the former Poverty Bay rugby representative is back with a vengeance, underlining his dramatic improvement with a sensational stableford performance last Thursday.

Owen won division 2 with 79-22-57, for 51 points, nine clear of second-placed Sam Willock.

It was the first time he had broken 80 since February 19, 2015.

Tolaga BayTere Lincoln completed a busy weekend of golf with victory in the men’s stableford on Sunday.

Having played two matches in the Oligoi Jug interclub pennants the day before, the left-hander’s swing was well-oiled and he won with 39 points.

PatutahiPat Molloy clearly had plenty of ammo left from his shootout victory.

A week after winning the men’s shootout final, Molloy came out all guns ablazin’ again, winning the men’s stableford on Sunday with 75-13-62, for 44 points.

Te Puia SpringsIan Sykes is the Jo Hale Memorial champion for 2018. Sykes’ net 63 on Sunday helped him to a total of 192 for his three best of four rounds, four strokes ahead of Peter Harrison.

Men’s pennantsPlenty of clubs are still in the title race heading into the final round of the Endeavour men’s interclub pennants.

Tahunga and Waikohu are joint top of the table on 46 points, with Poverty Bay and Gisborne Park only four behind and Mahia on 38.

With 24 points up for grabs in the final round at Poverty Bay on May 27, it will be all on.

Mahia enjoyed a successful round 3 at Te Puia Springs on Saturday, collecting 20 points. while Park, Tahunga and Poverty Bay picked up 16 apiece. Waikohu went into the round as series leaders but could only muster eight.

The performance of the day came from Poverty Bay’s Duncan Bush, who shot 73-14-59, for 43 points.
