It was a particularly happy St Patrick's Day — to be sure, to be sure — today for Gisborne couple Diane and Don Oates. Fifty years ago, Diane and Don got married. Diane did not want a big fuss made but did tell The Gisborne Herald they had travelled to
many overseas destinations and done a lot of things together.
“Our journey has been a very long, interesting and exciting one. We have always liked St Patrick's Day and years back we just so happened to make the decision to get married on the same day.”
Diane and Don celebrated their golden wedding anniversary early at a St Patrick's Day-themed lawn bowls tournament at Kahutia Bowling Club on Wednesday. They were among those who got right into the theme of the event.
