A 5.3 magnitude earthquake was felt by many Gisborne residents last night.
The earthquake — a bit of a jolt and a short period of shaking — struck at 11.37pm.
GeoNet said it was centred 70 kilometres north-west of Te Kaha at 11.37pm and at a depth of 171km.
More than 1300 residents across North Island, including Gisborne locals, reported the earthquake as “weak” while more than 800 New Zealanders felt it was “light.”
