Waikanae surf lifeguards helped a couple of sailors who got into difficulty in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa/Poverty Bay on Sunday.
The patrol spotted a sailboat overturned about 100 metres off Butler’s Wall about 1.15pm.
Patrol captain Ana Naden and Harry Allan launched an inflatable rescue boat and went to help.
“The lifeguards had to re-right, turn the sailboat over as the two lads on board were not making progress or having any luck by themselves,” Surf Life Saving NZ Tairāwhiti club support Thomas Dodds said.
“There was a bit of a drift to contend with and the wind wasn’t on their side. But all came away well. The IRB crew did an awesome job at responding and getting them back to shore safely.”
