Gisby is pictured on his way to victory in the final of the over-70s men’s division.
Gisborne legend John Gisby won his 40th title at the National Surfing Championships at Dunedin’s St Clair Beach this week . . . 40 years after winning his first.
Gisby won the final of the over-70s men’s division, which also featured fellow Gisborne surfers Ross Moodie (second) and Benny Hutchings (third).
Gisby claimed his first national title — the senior crown — at Midway Beach on January 6, 1984 (see the second photo in the picture gallery above for Gisby in action 40 years ago).
Since then, Gisby has won every men’s division outside of the open category at least once including 11 doubles (two age groups at the one champs).
Gisby, who indicated he did not intend to stop at 40, paid tribute to his home town after his latest win.
