Firefighters save house after adjoining garage gutted

A shed attached to a home in Devery Street in Mangapapa was gutted by fire on Tuesday night and firefighters worked hard to stop the fire spreading to involve the house.

A woman in the home noticed a smell of smoke at around 11pm, found the shed alight and called 111.

“When we arrived the shed was fully involved in fire,” a senior firefighter said.

“We were able to stop it fire from spreading to involve the adjoining home, though there was some burn damage to the home’s outer wall by the shed.”

“The shed was gutted, burnt out.” he said.

“There was also some moderate to minor smoke damage in some of the rooms of the house.”

On discovering the fire the woman got her teenage children out of the house to safety.

“There were no injuries. They were all OK.”

A specialist fire investigator was called in to examine the fire remains to try to ascertain how the fire got started.

The senior firefighter spoken to said it was not being treated as suspicious.

When the Herald went to print today the cause of the blaze was still under investigation.
