Fire destroys woolshed

A WOOLSHED burned to the ground on Whiorau Station between Morere and Nuhaka yesterday afternoon and the cause is still to be established.

The four-stand woolshed caught alight at around 2.30pm. Firefighters from Nuhaka volunteer brigade and Wairoa responded.

“The woolshed was pretty much on the ground by the time we got there,” a Nuhaka firefighter said.

The covered yards attached to the shed were also destroyed, along with part of an implements shed.

“The people on the property tried to put the fire out but didn’t have enough water. They were able to save a lot of their gear out of the sheds.”

Firefighters helped mop up the remains of the fire.

“The woolshed and yards are a total loss.”

The cause was not suspicious and was still to be definitely established, the firefighter said.

“A specialist fire investigator is to go to the property to look into it today.”

Wairoa firefighters were called to a small shed fire at the back of the Gaiety Theatre yesterday afternoon.

“It was out on arrival,” chief fire officer Duley said. “The crew just checked to ensure it was out.”
