Only one Mediterranean fanworm marine pest was found when divers inspected the underwater structures around Eastland Port's inner harbour last month.
“This was an amazing result given that in 2020 there were 60 found.” Gisborne District Council biosecurity team leader Philip Karaitiana said. Divers from the Bay of Plenty Regional
Council removed the fanworm, which was inspected and then destroyed. Mr Karaitiana said it showed the hard work has been paying off.
“The council will continue to work towards eradication, as per our Regional Pest Management Plan strategy, alongside Biosecurity NZ. We thank the boating community for continuing to do their part.”
