It has been interesting reading of the measures the public have to take to keep safe. As I was driven up to my family at Wharekopae on Christmas Day, I was horrified at the state of the road — both tarseal and metal. This road is publicised for visitors as a detour and a cycling trail, with a rock slide, Rere falls and Eastwoodhill arboretum to visit enroute. Well now, I think everyone who intends driving on this road should be warned it is an obstacle course!!
My daughter knows where most of the obstacles are (but she missed some!) and the bridges have “rubble” approaches — you have to proceed very carefully.
As we know that the young at R&V go out there, I can only hope there is not a bad accident — if they drive at their usual pace.
I know the police said they can’t sit beside drivers telling them to slow down, but do try before they leave you — for everyone’s sake.
I lived up in the hills for 30 years and never have I seen such disgraceful road conditions. And I don’t believe the “expert” who said the bitumen was up to specifications — that can’t be true for what we have now.
