After crashing into a lamp post while driving more than four times over the legal alcohol limit, a driver told police, “I was drinking beers”.
Koro Kingi had a breath-alcohol reading of 1057 micrograms when he was tested on July 9 this year, following his midnight collision on the corner
of Awapuni Road and Grey Street. He then asked for a blood-alcohol test but it only confirmed his high alcohol reading.
Kingi subsequently pleaded guilty to breaching a zero-alcohol licence, which he was subject to after being sentenced in January, last year, for a previous drink-drive involving another high reading.
Sentencing him this week in Gisborne District Court, Judge Warren Cathcart imposed 80 hours community work and an indefinite driver disqualification to be followed by three years of zero-alcohol licence conditions.
