“Matariki calls you home” is the theme of this year’s Matariki awareness campaign and police want to make sure motorists heading home for it get to reflect and be with whānau and friends this long weekend.

Area police commander Inspector Sam Aberahama said the focus in Tairāwhiti will be on at-risk driving, driving while impaired, distractions while driving, seatbelt use and speed.

“Our staff will be more visible over the weekend,” he said.

‘”There’s going to be a lot of people on the roads in the lead up to and over the weekend, and police will have a higher visibility on the roads between Wairoa and the top of the Coast,” Insp Aberahama said.

“We will have extra staff on the roads, and we are hoping to see people travel safely, not drinking and driving, and driving to the conditions.

“We want everyone to get to their destinations this Matariki weekend and be safe on our roads.
