As someone fortunate enough to live in the comparatively affluent Waikato town of Cambridge, may I offer you my sincerest apologies for the selfish actions of my local Waipa District Council. Like pretty much every council in New Zealand, WDC is broke because it spends beyond its means — as is our central government for that matter, also guilty of the same unrestrained spending largesse.
In any event, WDC is currently using both local money we don’t have, and central government money it doesn’t have, to build a cycleway we don’t need. “Need” is all relative of course, but Cambridge has roads and footpaths, whereas parts of the East Coast do not. What is more, I humbly acknowledge your region’s role in feeding us. As such, I am ashamed of our council’s hubris wastage, but wish you a sincere Merry Christmas all the same. Nothing lasts forever. Kia kaha.
