Para swimmer Sophie Pascoe lead a 200-strong New Zealand contingent of athletes and support staff at the opening ceremony of the 21st Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast last night.

The Kiwis received a huge ovation surpassed only by Australia — the last of the 71 nations and territories to enter Carrara Stadium.

Lawn bowlers and gymnasts were the first of the New Zealanders in action today.

Gisborne’s Tayler Reid contests the men’s triathlon at 3pm this afternoon.
