A woman charged with dangerous driving causing the death of American tourist Nicholas Simon has made a preliminary court appearance.
Mr Simon died after the vehicle he was driving was in collision with another vehicle on State Highway 2 (Matawai Road) at Te Karaka on Thursday, October 27, last year.
A 26-year-old
woman who was driving the other vehicle was subsequently charged with dangerous driving causing death and three counts of dangerous driving causing injury.
An arrest warrant was issued after she failed to turn up for her first scheduled court appearance at a registrar’s list last week.
At an appearance today, she was further remanded without plea and granted interim name suppression, which will be revisited at her next appearance before a judge on April 24.
The woman is on bail with a condition to live at a specified address.
Mr Simon was from the ski town of Steamboat, Colorado. He and his girlfriend were in New Zealand for a month on what was meant to be their “dream” holiday.
He was a keen skier, surfer and mountain biker. The collision happened when the couple were driving to their campsite after a day surfing.
Three others were injured in the crash.
