A car was gutted and the surrounding grass set alight in the early hours of Monday morning at the end of Centennial Marine Drive, near the mouth of the Waipaoa River.
Fire and Emergency NZ sent a crew to the scene at around 3am.
“The car was burnt out, and
the flames had set fire to about 40x15 square metres of grass and other vegetation around it,” a senior firefighter said.
“It appeared the vehicle had been dumped there.”
Police were advised.
