Breast scans at Gisborne Hospital are now more accurate and comfortable.

A new ultrasound tomography machine arrived from Sweden last month that is able to detect even the slightest abnormality in the breast. The technology reduces the need for needle biopsies.

A new modern consultation room has also been created to offer women more privacy and comfort.

Medical imaging technologists Elrika Patricio and Vanessa Smith are excited about the benefits for local wāhine.

“Having this machine means we can detect cancers earlier, speed up the process and ultimately save more lives,” said Ms Smith.

“The machine we had was over 10 years old and this new machine is so much more advanced.”

Ms Patricio said the team had been working on the project for over 18 months and the machine is the only one of its type in Tairāwhiti.

“There’s high worldwide demand for these machines so we were lucky we got in when we did,” she said.

“It’s been a long journey to finally

be able to offer this service but it’s all been worth it. Our women deserve the best.”

Gisborne Hospital radiology manager Debbie Cordiner said local women should see their doctor if they notice any lumps or bumps.

“Please   don’t  delay  in    getting checked.

“With a referral from your doctor, we can book you in for a scan in a matter of days or weeks, if needed.”
