Firefighters were called to two vegetation fires on Saturday, one as the result of a beach bonfire that got out of hand, and the other a car fire that spread to nearby grass.
The first callout happened at around 1.15pm Saturday at the mouth of the Waipaoa River.
“Some people
were having a bonfire on the beach and fanned by the strong seabreeze it spread into the grass in the dunes,” a senior firefighter said.
“Witnesses told us the people at the bonfire got in their vehicles and drove off once the fire spread.”
He said the city fire crews were able to contain the fire to an area of about 20 by 50 metres. • At about 3.30pm on Saturday FENZ sent an appliance to a car on fire in Cameron Road.
