The house she was found in, on Ngarimu’s Hill just south of Ruatoria, had been vacant for some time. Her body had been in the house for some time.
“The property recently changed hands and the body was found by the new owners who had gone to have a look around there last Saturday,” Det Sr Sgt Quinn said.
“They called police and that initiated our inquiry.”
Police completed their scene examination at the house on Tuesday and a security company scene guard at the front gate was then removed.
The Herald was told the family who now own the property visited it again yesterday.
Det Sr Sgt Quinn said they need the assistance of the Ruatoria community as they tried to establish how Ms Kawana came to be in Ruatoria.
“We would ask for any assistance local people can give us as we try to establish her movements in and around that community.”
He would not be drawn on the timeframe involved, only to say police were still trying to establish it.
“We are also still trying to speak to people who knew Kathleen and get a full picture of her movements.
“We have spoken to her family in Porirua to help us with our inquiries.”
Police are appealing for any information that could assist their investigation.
“That includes anyone who can provide details of Ms Kawana’s movements between Porirua and Ruatoria.”
