Awatere Bridge on East Cape Road will be closed to all vehicles and pedestrians from today through until Sunday afternoon.
The Gisborne District Council has advised that contractors will be installing a new Bailey bridge at the site.
During the closure the only access will be the ford crossing.
“The temporary Bailey bridge will be in place for up to three months and will have a maximum weight restriction up to ‘Class 1’ or 44 tonne,” the council said.
“This is great news as contractors work on the permanent fix to the bridge pier.”
