A personal remembrance . . . that is how Campbell MacFarlane describes the service flags and the flags of New Zealand and Australia displayed outside his home as Anzac Day approaches.
His neighbours have told him they enjoy the display. Mr MacFarlane said his late father David, who served in
Coastal Command, never discussed the war and did not claim his campaign medals. But Mr MacFarlane does have the campaign medals of his uncle, who was killed in Italy after a mechanical fault in his Mustang, while wife Barbara has the campaign medals of her uncle who served in the Pacific. Mr MacFarlane said he and Barbara had not attended the Anzac Day service for the last two years but medals and other items in their home served as a personal remembrance.
Meanwhile, Gisborne District Council has lit up the clock tower in red to honour the country’s war dead — a suitably coloured car caught on camera approaching it on Saturday night.
