Now that NZ has had a fortnight to mourn the loss of what would have been a fourth Rugby World Cup, an Aussie from across the ditch couldn’t be more impressed with the dignity and gentlemanliness Kiwis have shown. A gutsy All Blacks beaten by the immoveable Springboks in the for-the-ages, champagne, on-a-knife-edge RWC 2023 final was two hours of reprieve from rattling war and climate chaos.
Eddie Jones intruding with a look-at-me divorce from Rugby Australia on the same day that the brave finalists confirmed rugby union to be made in sports heaven was ignominiously timed. Jones’s headline hogging bloody-mindedness, a monumental waste of a year and his ill-treatment of unwanted veterans like Michael Hooper, will march on into the distant horizon of non-relevance.
Good riddance!
