Summer Thieves

New Zealand’s favourite indie rock band, Summer Thieves will play at Smash Palace on Friday, January 12, at 8pm.  The tour coincides with the release of their new album, Cigarettes In Space, and promises to be an unforgettable musical journey for fans across the country. Summer Thieves are set to embark on tour that will showcase their unique blend of indie rock, reggae, and folk-infused sound. Tickets are $40 and the show starts at 8pm. http://tinyurl.com/2p9vnnn7

Summer Soundscape

The inaugural Summer Soundscape is a new showcase hitting the Smash Palace stage on Jan 13. Featuring Torn (Creed Tribute), Last Moon Ticket, Natasha Lee, Robert Porter, Levi Mackey, Pray for Summer and Sunder — Gizzy’s newest rock band, made up of members of Harbinger, Blackened Metallica Tribute and Lazy Fifty. Gaza Children’s Appeal Fundraiser

Tairāwhiti Multicultural Council is organising a fundraiser by selling food on  January 13 at the International Food Festival to raise money for the children of Gaza who are needlessly suffering. All proceeds from the event will be donated to UNICEF New Zealand’s appeal. Please come and support this event. Gisborne Boys’ High School, 5pm to 7pm.

Summer Frequency 2024

A huge lineup of international and local artists will share their music at Summer Frequencies from Friday January 19 to Sunday January 21. Summer Frequencies will host some of the biggest names in music including Kora, HP Boyz, Adeaze, Aaradhna, DJ Noiz, Deceptikonz, Tomorrow People, 1814 and House of Shem to name a few.

Wrights Vineyard & Winery — Soulful Sunday

Sunday, January 28. DJ Missing Link will kick off the party with funky vibes from 12pm to 2pm. Then, get ready for an enchanting Jazz Trio by the talented Allana Goldsmith from 2pm to 5pm. Allana is a rare gem in the jazz scene. Born in Ruatoria, East Cape, Allana brings a unique touch to her music, incorporating Te Reo Māori into jazz standards and composing her own soulful tunes. Gourmet pizzas, ice creams from the Ice Cream Bros, and goodies from the deli area will be available. The cellar will be open from 11am to 5pm. Music will be from 12pm to 5pm. Wrights Vineyard & Winery, 1093 Wharerata Road,  Manutuke.

The Millard Studio

Tairāwhiti Museum until Sunday January 28. This exhibition displays many fine portraits taken in the early 1900s, costumes of the time and significant locals and groups are reprinted in large format to show their glamour and detail. The Millard studio was established in 1915.

Uruhau – Toihoukura – School of Māori Visual Art

Uruhau is an exhibition of new works by the students of Toihoukura School of Māori Visual Art. This exhibition is a celebration of resilience and achievements. Tairāwhiti Museum, closes on February 11.

He Kākahu Rerehua — The Uplifting Wind

He Kākahu Rerehua |The Uplifting Wind weaves together an exhibition, collection care project and wānanga in one space. Each strand of this kaupapa honours the different dimensions of a kākahu: the materials, the process of its creation, the life it has led and the people it is connected to.  The gallery will showcase a selection of kākahu (Māori garments), and the story of transformation from raw materials to taonga tuku iho (treasures handed down from the ancestors) through the skill, knowledge and ingenuity of the weaver. Although many of the makers are not known, we celebrate their creativity and talent.
